Men Are Idiots in Nike's Women's Soccer Commercials

September 17th, 2007 by Glenn Sacks, MA for Fathers & Families

If you ask most women athletes about their careers, they'll tell you about a male coach they had somewhere along the way who encouraged them, taught them, and help them become what they are. There's no hint of this, however, in Nike's women's soccer commercials.

The men are idiots in both "Tearaway" (pictured) and "Mask." In "Tearaway," a woman also inflicts great pain on a man, which is, of course, "funny."

What's most interesting here is the almost frightening way in which media can "reframe" reality. Here, despite the fact that men have created and dominated athletics, they make it look like females wrote the book and men are a bunch of dorks who can't compete.

I now get why minorities complain about what the media does to them. It's amazing how a little of this will go a long way in changing people's perceptions of themselves and others. The next time a minority group complains about media treatment, I'll listen.

If I watch enough of these commercials, it really does seem like women built the world, should run it now and invented everything.

    Glen,

Off topic, but you may want to look at this disgraceful article at MSN Lifestyle: Women - Starter husbands is it wrong?

    The Starter Husband
You'd never buy a car without test-driving it first right? So why settle into a lifelong marriage before trying one on for size?

..haven't read the article, but wouldn't a woman who enters a "lifelong" marriage contract and conceals intentions to not actually live up to that contract be guilty of fraud?..

Yes, PJK, she would be guilty. But since a woman can shoot her husband and kill him and get a few months in prison, I don't think a guilty verdict in the case of fraud would amount to much punishment!

Glenn you couldn't be more right about women in sport. My sister is the sportiest person I know, swear to God she'll be in the Olympics (London 2012) and she owes it all to her male coaches. Her PE teacher at school has helped her a lot too, but she'd be nowhere without the men who train and motivate her, and of course my mum and dad who ecourage her.

The ad of course is despicable. Again this idea that men hate all women in sport, which is of course wrong. And it's all nicely topped off with the 'sister' kicking the ball at him, presumabely in the crotch to show him how tough girls really are.

I really think somebody should make a version with the genders reversed, see if it's funny.

Soccer today is the ideal mom's sport for children. It is even better for what I call 'stoccer mom's, who essentially stalk, surveil, and harass with little fear. I refer to my children sometimes as 'soccer youth' (i.e. youth soccer reversed) because of their PAS has taken place there as well as a home.

So Phil Knight, Nike co-founder, makes a bundle off women selling them shoes then donates $100M of it on MEN'S sports at UofO. Let's see, for every pair of shoes sold, another brick for the men's basketball court...

Interesting, they only have Mask on their website (at least that I found through a quick glance):

Here is there email form. Once you write the email, you need to hit submit a few times to get through the junk and FAQs.

    dear tony s,

you are a huge idiot. i'm assuming you are a white heterosexual male, and you have the audacity to say you feel like a minority with that commercial. get real, grow up, and get out of your patriarchal bubble. i'm not saying the commercial is perfect but this has nothing to do with making men look inferior, especially in a global society which everyone knows white males are not at all the minority. you're an idiot.

    good day.
