Some thoughts on mob-friendly political applause lines
December 16th, 2008 by Glenn Sacks, MA for Fathers & FamiliesIn Georgia Woman Victimized by Draconian Sex Laws, I discussed the case of Wendy Whitaker, who is being hounded from place to place because she's a fake "sex offender." We've covered many examples of these types of cases, including:
Teen Boy Must 'register as sex offender for life after having sex with his girlfriend'
2 Men Go to Prison over Teen Girl's Lie--and More on the Way
The common themes in these cases and many similar ones is legislation driven by sound bite and mob-friendly political applause lines about sticking it to group X or group Y.
I always cringe when I hear these lines. A recent example was Barack Obama's oft-repeated presidential campaign promise to stick it to "Big Oil." (Not to say that the point is completely without merit; Jay Leno had a good line about the recent pirate capture of a Saudi Oil tanker--"It's a standoff between an oil company and pirates--who do you root for?")
Usually the group targeted by the mob-friendly applause line is comprised mostly of men--"deadbeat dads," "sexual predators," etc. In considering this, I was wondering--is there any set of popular political applause lines where the targeted group are women?
It's hard to think of many. "Welfare cheats," maybe. "Liberals," I suppose, but that's a pretty broad group. Anybody have any ideas?
