Soldier’s Home: Tearful Reunion as Sailor Returns from Iraq, Surprises Little Son in Class

April 9th, 2007 by Glenn Sacks, MA for Fathers & Families

A reader sent me this touching video clip of a Washington State father's reunion with his son. Sailor Bill Hawes, home from service in Iraq, snuck into his little son's kindergarten class, which had been sending him letters overseas. The little boy races to his father and sobs "I love you daddy" when daddy scoops him up.

See the video below.

One question--have you ever seen anything better?

No comment, except that I keep watching this video over and over again...

  2. Rich Says:

I can't watch that without a tear coming to my eye.

  3. Andy Says:

I rarely have tears come out, but watching this just made them come down my cheeks. It also reminded me of what if MIGHT be like for my 3 kids (ages 4, 6 and 7) IF the courts grant my Ex to move to England to live with her boyfriend.

  4. Ray Says:

Having just retired from the Marine Corps (with multiple OIF tours) and being a father long denied access to my son, my heart breaks every time I see this.

PS. His rank is Petty Officer 1st Class, not Ensign.

  5. Doug Says:

AWESOME VIDEO.... It is about time the libreal media shows the love between father and child!

  6. chris Says:

The first thing that made me come close to crying in years.

  7. Bryan Says:

I can't watch the clip right now (am in the middle of a conference) but will shortly. Interestingly, I don't even need to watch to know how good it will be to see something, and know others are too - something that is all too rarely seen, or known about.

after seeing the video i was in tears the little boy showed he was crying out for his father to come home well thats just another example of what happens when u separate a child from his father damn the politicians & the courts for that we are amongst a powerful evil force in government and in the politicians and lawyers that are destroying our kids for the sake of money

  9. BusyBee Says:

What a great clip! Andy and Ray, I'll say prayers for you and your children. All children need their fathers and it is so sad when they are denied that right.

  10. Steve Says:

Being a father with 50% custody I can go to town putting down (telling the truth about) his mom if this bill passes!!!

  11. Matt Says:

Way to make a grown man cry in front of his coworkers, Glenn.
    That was beautiful.

  12. don Says:

WOW, now that was nice, father and son reunion

  13. fatherof2 Says:

This is not an exception...you can clearly see the importance of fathers...WHY CAN"T OUR FAMILY COURTS REALIZE THIS TRUTH...it's insanity to think otherwise...

  14. Steve Says:

Stephen speaks the truth!!!!...IF YOU WERE A LAWYER AND NEEDED TO SUPPORT YOUR FAMILY, WOULD YOU DEFEND A WIFE AND CHILD BEATER WHOSE PARENTS COULD PAY YOU WELL OR AN INNOCENT ACCUSED FATHER WHO COULD NOT PAY YOU AT ALL?
If I needed to make a living you know who I'd be defending!!!!! LOL It's a rich man's world, sorry! I shouldn't say world, there's other countries that put love and health before money...

  15. Mike Says:

    Great clip .

  16. joe Says:

  17. jodie Says:

  18. jodie Says:

opps i mean dont think its fair ...

  19. Steve Says:

Sure fathers are important and also being fair with them, but not at the expense of the taxpayer.

  20. J. Woody Gilliam Says:

Wonderful Dad and son....I am going to videotape my boys crying when I can't take them, due to their mother's spitefulness, and show it in court for my trial.

  21. Tom G Says:

Dads are important too, this proves it.

[...] The announcement, which can be found here, is below. While we're on the subject of military dads, make sure to take a moment to watch one of the greatest things I've ever seen at Soldier’s Home: Tearful Reunion as Sailor Returns from Iraq, Surprises Little Son in Class. [...]

  23. deborah Says:

wonderful video. Children need their fathers, and their mothers. I am a single mother. My son's father had no input till he was thirteen, but only for a year. His choice not mine. I still taught him to respect his father. The anger at father came at me, but we made it through. He is joining the service against my wishes. I honour the soldiers, but distrust a government that puts our men under UN leadership against the Constitution, and those leaders do not protect them. Your video made me weep... for your sweet son, for mine, and for those countless others that our government intends to put through the grist mill for land, oil and power. God bless you, and yours. Stay safe.

  24. Kate Says:

My boyfriend is in Iraq at the moment and it has been the hardest thing I've ever been through..He's been gone for 6 months but back in 2 weeks. I'm not a six year old girl but I know for a fact I'll be crying like this when I run back in to his arms!!

    What a little cutie
